We can all agree on one thing: Promoting yourself humbly is something we all yearn to do but have no idea how to do it.
Everyone, whether you are extroverted or introverted, doesn’t want to sound like a blow hard when pimping their wins to colleagues.
No one wants to be the office lounge lizard pontificating about the latest, greatest and, of course, their most magnificent win – when in reality they sound like a complete cheezeball who simply buckled their pants the right way today.
Most people underestimate what they really did or overstate what they imagined they would have done.
Two extremes. And I am telling you there is a way to humbly do this and be somewhere in the middle.
So, I say “Introverts, gather ’round…” and “Extroverts, stick around.”
I am going to show you a thing or two about promoting yourself humbly.
And I guarantee you will walk away learning something you can apply TODAY:
When promoting yourself in a humble manner, it’s key to do the following:
1. Stick to factual achievements.
Be sure when speaking about your latest accomplishment to stick to the facts. Don’t embellish or deceive. Just promote the facts, which increases your credibility in your circles.
2. Avoid relative superlatives.
Saying phrases like you strive for excellence, have a top-tier skill set or you are a high performer doesn’t really tell the listener anything specific about you. Additionally, these terms are relative and many people use them to describe themselves–even when it’s really not the case. Think of it this way, when was the last time you heard someone label themselves a low performer? Or say they strive for mediocrity? Right? So the key is to avoid these superlative generalities and speak in specifics that are unique to you.
3. Continuously take action – don’t remain stagnant.
Don’t remain stagnant and waiting to be recognized. I find when people continuously do the work in front of them, they get a reputation as the person to go to in order to get things done. It’s inherent humble promotion.
4. Don’t tie expectations to your actions.
When you take action, do it with a pure heart. Don’t do it in hopes of always getting something in return. Don’t tie a reciprocal expectation to taking action.
